LINDEN LIGHTS 2023
So many of our neighbours show such comradery, skill and creativity when preparing for this time of year! They do not need encouragement from LWCC, but once again, we seek to celebrate the efforts of the community. This year, we’ve got some youngsters (think ‘no driver’s license’) and some more seasoned critics lined up to cruise our themed streets and decked-out homes.
Our most favourite part about this event is when a street gets a theme/design in mind and then neighbours help neighbours to bring it to fruition. Some streets have been doing this for years! You’d wonder if maybe it isn’t in the buyer’s contract when they agree to buy a home on one of those streets! We can’t confirm this is the case, but you can be assured that the first Christmas season in their home, they surely are invited to participate! We appreciate and thank those who continue to celebrate those neighbourly relationships! THE BEST OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON, to you and yours!
PS. Please find the ‘best route’ map on our website, to reduce congestion and ensure safe passage for emergency vehicles should the need arise!!

General Manager Position |
CHILDREN'S HOLIDAY PARTY
You may have been noticed our posts on social media, and we are so disappointed, however........ to find ourselves, in the unfortunate situation where the lack of a Special Events board member, has affected our ability to put together this event. The board regrettably has had to cancel the Annual Children’s Holiday Party at Linden Woods Community Centre!
Although we’ve been very fortunate through this year, to have had sufficient volunteers (thank you) to plan successful events such as:
- Our summer carnival,
- A fall festival
- Our much loved and supported LWCC craft sale…
.....however, it has proven to be too much of a challenge to get this holday event off the ground.
We look forward to a community volunteer joining the board to take up the torch of special events! We would love to see a Holiday Party in 2024.

Youth Outdoor Soccer Season
Youth Outdoor Soccer runs from late April to June, with U13+ continuing in September for playoffs.
Typical Game Days:
Odd ages (9, 11, 13, 15, 17) play on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Even ages (10, 12, 14, 16, 18) play Mondays and Wednesdays
Games are sometimes played on weekends (rare for younger teams). Coaches will schedule one practice during the week. HOME games are played in Kleysen Park behind Linden Woods Community Centre. AWAY games are played on fields in various locations in South-West Winnipeg (U9-12) and throughout Winnipeg and surrounding area (U13+). The team rosters, schedules, and game locations are generally available by April 15.
Registration for Outdoor soccer opens March 1-15.
Youth Indoor Soccer Season
Youth Indoor soccer runs from late October to mid-March and is played in indoor facilities throughout Winnipeg. Girls typically play on Saturdays and boys typically play on Sundays. There may be an occasional weeknight game. Coaches will schedule one practice throughout the week. Your practice day cannot be determined until registration closes as we schedule after teams are formed.
Registration for indoor soccer is typically September 1-15. The team rosters, schedule and game locations are typically available by the end October.
Games start November 12-13, 2022
Registration Policies
WYSA rules for recreational soccer states that families must register with the community centre in the area they live in. Linden Ridge families are in the Whyte Ridge catchment. Transfers to and from other community centres in the district are accommodated whenever possible. Please indicate any friend or team requests on your registration form and we will try to accommodate. Transfers in or out of district (such as Charleswood) require approval from the directors of both clubs.
Players are assigned to teams based on the date and time stamp of registration. If a team is full, players may be transferred to a team hosted by a nearby community centre. We cannot guarantee which centre will be the host of your child’s team and refunds due to team placement are not guaranteed. Once teams are formed, that space is reserved for your child.
Requests for team changes or withdrawals jeopardizes the viability of that team. We do not want to have to fold a team and disappoint other players, coaches and disrupt the league schedule. Refunds are at the discretion of LWCC and may take into account team fees or administration fees already incurred.

Is Ice-Making an ART or a SCIENCE? (excerpt from Linden Words Jan 2022 edition)
Have you ever wondered how the rink ice is made? Well, if you have, here is the “low-down” from last year's Ice-Maker, Mitchell.
Patience is a virtue in this profession, as absolutely everything is dependent on weather. Nothing gets started until the daytime high is -3C or colder, consistently, for at least a week. Of course, as the temperature dips, we skaters start thinking... ‘cold today—skate tomorrow’. Unfortunately, when temperatures are warmer than required (between -2C and 0) the heat of the sun will melt or soften the ice, compromising the ice base and resulting in having to start all over.
Once it is cold enough, the first step is to pack snow (if there is any) around the base of the boards to prevent water seepage during the first floods. So prior to this stage, we are hoping for a good bit of snow to assist in step one!
The next step is to flood 5-10 times with a fire hose, until the ice is as thick as the highest level of the rink base – a few inches. Flooding is done when the temperatures are the coldest, early morning and in the evening. Unless it is very cold out, flooding during the day is not done because it takes too long for the water to freeze under the heat of the sun. On a really cold day, it is sometimes possible to complete 3-4 floods in a day.
After the ice is a few inches thick, the hoses are set aside and the ice-surfacer is used to clear off small amounts of snow, scrape and level the ice, and spread fresh water over the surface of the ice. From first snow-pack to first skate gliding on the pristine surface - the process takes approximately two weeks. Sometimes eager skaters will check out the ice and assume it is ready to go. However, if skating does occur before the ‘Rinks are Open’ sign goes up, the process of filling in holes and scraping the ice level again, can set back the process by a week. It delays the unveiling of the masterpiece!
Once the ice is in, daily maintenance involves snow removal (which has been a big challenge this year, running out of places to put it), scraping, and coating with fresh water twice a day under normal circumstances. Sometimes it is only once a day, and sometimes it is more – depending on weather. If it is snowing out, work stops until the weather system has passed. There is no point in working against Mother Nature at that point, she always wins.
So how much does all of this cost for power, water, staff, fuel, equipment maintenance, etc.? Around $15,000 – depending again, on how the weather cooperates, of course! But the pride of the ice-maker and providing the outdoor hockey and pleasure skating opportunity for the community? Priceless!
*************************************************************
ONCE THE RINKS OPEN, you will want to know that.... the latest they are open, is 10pm.
The south rink (directly behind the gym) is allocated for skating only – no sticks, pucks, or nets. The north rink (behind the viewing/skate change area) is for recreational or pick-up hockey. In other words, this is where the sticks, pucks, and nets go. At this time, neither rink is made available for private functions, team practices, or league play.
In the interests of public safety, and to allow the ice maker to work more efficiently, no one is allowed on either rink when equipment (ice surfacer, snowblowers, edgers) is in use on any part of the rink. If the equipment is being used at one end of the rink, the other end is not available for use.
Chairs located inside the centre are not to be taken outside to be used as skating aids. It is not safe, and the chairs can damage the ice unnecessarily.
The centre follows the City of Winnipeg’s recommendations for rink closures during extreme cold temperatures. The rinks are closed whenever it is -30C or colder or -35C with wind chill. We have been referencing https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/mb-38_metric_e.html to determine the temperatures. As requested by the survey responses, we will to keep information about the status of the rinks regularly updated here!

*2022 BIRDHOUSES ARE BACK
BIRDHOUSES ARE BACK — and so are the birds! This challenge has the potential to lead you to all our LWs parks! On social media, we’ve posted about our new line-up of accommodations for our feathered friends! We’ve hung birdhouses in trees on private property, visible from the street-AND-between two of our three neighbourhood parks (Van Walleghem Park and Muys Park). Birdhouses have been decorated by local youth and are more akin to starter homes than some decidedly bachelor houses from last year’s collection, and the artists were more than willing to take on the snazzy structures. QR codes on the birdhouses, will link to LWCC website telling you if you found the feature birdhouse and how to win. When you send a selfie with the right birdhouse, to our Instagram account or email, you will be entered into the draw for weekly prizes. The weekly winners, will head to LWCC, right next door to Kleysen Park, the third park in our neighborhood. At LWCC your prize redemption will be products from our newly renovated and recently opened canteen

The return of the LINDEN WOODS CRAFT SALE, after 15 long years, could not have been such a resounding success, without the stars aligning... ⭐️⭐️⭐️

-Eager crafters have been adding to their products and product lines for many pandemic months
-Shoppers brought a pent-up demand for craft sales and were determined to buy local. They were just so excited to shop 😍
-Joelle's team of volunteers who worked long and hard at set-up, parking, directing, take-down, clean-up.... Amazing!!
-Weather was fantastic...🌞
⭐️⭐️⭐️That's a bunch of stars aligning, right?...⭐️⭐️⭐️

CTV news clip
Board members Joelle and Julie, and admin support Jennifer, were instrumental in bringing the hugely popular craft sale back to the community, after a 15yr hiatus. It was a resounding success. Due to the un-expected balmy weather, the parking was able to extend behind the Community Ctr, making for much less parking congestion on the streets. The more than 50 vendors in attendance, saw nearly one thousand folks meandering throughout LWCC and by all accounts, were pleased with the turnout and their sales.
The silent auction prize winners were:
Basket #1 Raphael
Basket #2 Beth M
Basket #3 Carmen M
Basket #4 Saira
Basket #5 Nadine B
Basket #6 Sofia P
Basket #7 Veronica
Basket #8 Cheryl C
Thank you to the many crafters, shoppers, and volunteers, who contributed to the success of this event.

PREPPING ... for Garage Sale
- Set up – Car break-ins what they are, it is probably wise to keep your car garaged, and just get up earlier than normal, for set up. Maybe create a map of your tables (and where items will sit) and chalk off sections of your driveway, so there is a dedicated location for items.
- Parking – Talk to neighbours who aren’t having a sale…. Can you borrow their driveway so your car is off the street? The streets can get very busy and emergency vehicles may need access.
- Signs – It’s a community sale, but place signs (or several) at the end of your street that advertise your address! You don’t need a day or a time… just your address and items “Kids stuff / Books / games” should do the trick
- Shopping bags – There are few grocery bags on hand these days but even those doggy waste bags would hold multiple knick knacks. Mid-sized boxes for heavier or fragile items, such as books, vases and kitchenwares.
- Be friendly, but be aware – If you’re welcoming and friendly, people will be much more likely to browse through your things. However, be sure to keep someone is always in-charge of your proceeds. Cover up or move items that you don't want removed or sold, and keep your house locked.
- Be flexible with pricing – If a shopper wants to haggle the price of a book down a dollar or two, don’t lose sleep over it. Once you’re able to enjoy a clutter free home, you won’t miss that book a bit.
- Release your attachment to your stuff –Remember – you’re letting go of these things for a reason. The last thing you want to do is have too much of an attachment to your things.
- Figure out what to do with the rest of your stuff – Once the garage sale is over, you’ll have to figure out what to do with all of the stuff that didn’t sell. If the item has real value, consigning or reselling is a good option. Although we can’t suggest one organization over another, you certainly can, in the FB event comments, if you have ideas to share on that.
2020 ** LINDEN LIGHTS
What a delight our community provided to light-seekers from far and wide. The holiday lights tradition was a safe and welcome distraction this year, from the Covid-19 realities. We thank those home-owners who continued the decorating traditions; that have steadily increased their arsenal of decorations; that rallied their street to start even more street themes. We had Nutcrackers, Polar Bears, Candy Canes, Reindeers, Snowmen, Santas, & Penquins.... all making an appearance. What fun we will have at the end of 2021 after seeing a couple more streets getting into the fray! The competition is heating up!
This year, the judges headed out in their own 'bubbles' instead of the shared transportation of previous years - and then, using the rubric, came to a consensus on our first two awards. We also launched a third *People's Choice* category this year, determined from voting results on our website. It seemed popular for the first year, so watch for your opportunity to vote next year.
As a result of the judging and voting....... please join LWCC in congratulating the winners:
*Best Street - Candy Cane Lane
*Best House - 125 Shorecrest Drive
*People's Choice - 178 Foxmeadow
It's a great thing to be able to share with the city and lift the spirits around the holiday season. Thanks to our community, thanks to the judges and thanks to the visitors for showing your appreciation and making it so much fun for all!
Our special events duo, Laura & Christine, were interviewed by a couple of media outlets and did a great job of reminding folks to come and take it in, but to do so in a safe & considerate fashion.
